Did you know that newborn babies can see only BLACK (darkness) and WHITE (illumi- na4ons by all sunlight's wave lengths) un4l the infant brain can grow to interpret what wavelength their cones are picking up. A%er about 5 weeks of life, babies can dis4nguish first, the color RED, and in about 5 months, a baby can dis4nguish all the colors of the rainbow that an adult can. Similarly, other creatures have developed sensi4vity to what wavelengths enabled them to func4on. For example, today we know that your pet dogs and cats are not color blind. Whereas humans have 3 types of cone cells in their eyes ac4vated by all colors of the rainbow, your pets have only 2 types. This means they can see yellow and blue, but the others are sort of muddled grey. So when you pick out that perfect pet toy, you'll ex- cite them with a yellow or blue one, and only your own eyes with a red or orange toy that they will see as grey. Another oddity about the sun's "rainbow" of colors is that for most humans although we have the poten4al to recognize all the rainbow colors, our brains facilitate which ones to recognize, that is, colors we "see", we name.
