It's here where William Rockefeller built an Elizabethan castle on 179 acres of prime riverfront property for his country estate. The base
stood at 150 feet above the Hudson and was set back 500 feet, allowing for majes3c views of the mountains and the river. The property was a
quick jaunt from the city either by boat, by train (Rockwood Hall had its own railroad sta3on), or by horse and carriage as the miles of carriage
roads within the park were designed for. No expense was spared. Masons were brought in from Scotland, wood carvers from Switzerland and
gardeners from England to create what was the second largest mansion in the country, second only to the Biltmore Estate in Ashville, NC. While
planned as a summer home, Rockefeller made Rockwood Hall his full-3me residence un3l his death in 1922. His heirs decided to sell the prop-
