18 HOOK two free events on the calendar. The first, on Sunday, June 15th, is an upli#ing Juneteenth celebra3on featuring revered gospel singers The Legendary Ingrame4es. Later, on Sunday, July 27th, Bang on a Can brings a very unique presenta3on of legendary American com- poser Terry Riley's In C. This piece, presented here in a format created specifically for the grounds of Caramoor, gave birth to the music style known as Minimalism in 1964 and con3nues to resonate with audiences 60 years later. The central theme to the season is that there is no central theme other than fantas- 3c, live music. "Somebody who is coming to one of our Music and Medita3on concerts on a Saturday morning, I want them to feel re- laxed and at peace and one with nature, tak- ing a one-hour pause from the busy world," explains Schuman. "But somebody who comes to hear Endae Owens and the Cookout on Friends Field I hope is going to get up and dance and have a casual evening with their family or their partner. We do have several of those Friends Fields concerts where people get up and dance, that's super fun." Caramoor is more than the sum of the con- certs, however. The historic Rosen House and grounds are open to visitors at 3mes, and you can book a popular A#ernoon Tea served in the Music Room. In addi3on, Caramoor has become home to a large collec3on of sound art. The Sonic Innova3ons program began in 2014 and has some permanent pieces as well as some that are on loan. Each one is unique and mys3cal. "Some of the pieces are more physical, you can see something and hear it," Schuman explains. "Some of them you walk through the woods and you hear things and you don't know where it's coming from. You're meant to experience it in nature. They are all different. These are things people can explore on their own by walking the grounds. You don't need anybody with you, you don't need a tour. You just go, you find it, and you take from it what you will." Seeing a live performance at Caramoor is simply unlike a4ending one anywhere else. The evolu3on of the property and venue has been wholly remarkable. "You hear the birds singing, and see all that nature and on a beau3ful night, there's nothing like it," ex- plains Schuman. "Some3mes you'll be in the Vene3an Theater listening to a concert and suddenly the Heavens will open, there's a tor- ren3al downpour, and it's kind of exci3ng. There you are, listening to music and everyone is sharing this thing together." Physically, Caramoor is looking its very best and the programming is leading edge.
