12 HOOK Seeing a live performance at Caramoor is simply unlike a4ending one anywhere else. The evolu3on of the property and venue is wholly remarkable. "You hear the birds singing, and see all that nature and on a beau3ful night, there's nothing like it." Caramoor Ar3s3c Director Kathy Schuman does not hesitate when asked why the historic performing arts des3na3on has thrived for so many years. "It's special," she says. "We're not a big generic performing arts center. When you come to Caramoor, you feel like you are at somebody's home. There's a very in3mate, wonderful feeling here." This invi3ng warmth permeates the en3re property, which features five separate per- forming spaces. These range from the 1,500 seat Vene3an Theater, to the in3mate in- door Music Room within the historic Rosen House, to the newest addi3on, an open field venue known as Friends Field which invites audiences to bring picnics and blan- kets and enjoy a concert on the lawn. Each venue offers a unique experience, but they are 3ed together by a steadfast love of live music. "It's totally different from watching on a screen at home, I don't care how good your system," points out Schuman. "Live music is one of the few art forms where it is kind of abstract. Your mind can wander, It can be many things to different people. You just have to let go and experience it." This season, Caramoor's 80th Summer Season, will feature a wide variety of musical acts from all over the world. From established stars to emerging ar3sts, they represent a mul3tude of genres and styles. There will truly be something for everyone. Photograph by Stefan Cohen
