Some aspects that passive building today brings to
the table include employing high-performance triple
pane windows oriented to maximize sunlight when
your house needs to stay warmer in winter, lowering
the cost of hea9ng a home. Some building principles
have been around for hundreds of years, when farm-
houses were built with south-facing windows for natu-
ral light and thermal gain, while porch roofs blocked
summer sun but allowed winter sun into the home.
"People built like this forever," says Bosley. "I think the
inven9on of air condi9oning really turned things
around. You no longer had to face the sun, no longer
had to take a passive approach to hea9ng and cooling
energy." With this change also came less and less
wrap-around or full porches. With a permanent roof
over it, porches take away from square footage avail-
able inside a home, but with their loss, glare enters
windows and there's less shade provided.
