Gin, the English name for the Dutch
medicinal tonic genever, was always
based on Juniper berries, a potent
medicinal herb. Easy and cheap to
make in the late Middle Ages, it was
drunk as a protection from the pol-
luted water in cities and as a health
and emotion fortifier. Skip centuries
later to the elegant Royal drinking
clubs of the late 19th century and
then the Roaring Twenties in the US,
and gin became a delightful base
for many drinks and cocktails. Here
Jen, of Hudson Valley Wine Cellar
gives a new "signature" Tuxedo
cocktail recipe. Delicious!
